Daily torpor and hibernation (also known as multiday torpor) in these heterothermic endotherms are the most effective energy conservation methods available to endotherms. Both of these states have a characterization of pronounced temporal and controlled reductions in body temperature, energy expenditure, water loss, and other physiological functions. 

Hibernators spend most of the winter in a state of torpor that lasts for multiple days, significantly improving their chances of surviving the season. On the other hand, daily heterotherms enter a state of torpor that lasts for several hours daily, typically during the rest phase but in some cases all year long. 

Torpor is an adaptation that many animals use from all climate zones, including the tropics. It is highly diverse, with about 25 to 50% of all mammals, but there is an estimate of fewer birds who use it. Although inactivity is still widely considered a specific adaptation of a few cold-climate species, Many animals from all climate zones use it. 

Torpor serves not only the purpose of conserving energy in adverse conditions, which is an important aspect of its role, but also the purpose of allowing or facilitating energy-demanding processes, such as reproduction and growth, which is especially important in situations where there is a limited supply of food. 

Even migrating birds will go into torpor to save their energy for the next stage, while bats may use it to cope with the heat. 

Even though many heterothermic species will face challenges due to anthropogenic influences like the destruction of their habitat, the introduction of new species, the discovery of new pathogens, and particularly global warming, not all of these species are likely to have an impact in the same way. 

Opportunistic heterotherms may be better equipped to deal with anthropogenic challenges than homeotherms because of their highly flexible energy requirements, ability to limit foraging and reduce predation risk, and often pronounced longevity. 

On the other hand, strongly seasonal hibernators, particularly those confined to mountain tops and those that have to cope with new illnesses that are difficult to combat when the body temperature is low, are likely to be adversely affected.
